Darkness On The Run features 13 new original songs from the Third Sunday Band. The title reflects a recurring theme in this music -- shining some light through the darkness that can sometimes fill our world.
Many of the songs were written by guitarists Al Todd and Norm Mayfield during a week-long (and hurricane filled) spiritual retreat on North Carolina's Outer Banks. The opening song, Rise Up, captures the feel of a stormy Outer Banks sunrise, and was written while sitting on the beach marveling at and celebrating God's awesome power and the gift of each new day. There are several inspirational ballads that contemplate our faith and need for prayer and communion. Prayer For A Wandering Soul provides a heartfelt prayer for understanding, faith, and God's unending grace, as we all have times to doubt ourselves, Grant Them Peace is a prayer of outreach to those we love and care for andBring It All To Me is a communion offering that acknowledges the foundations of our beliefs.
Al and Norm also teamed up with lyricist and percussionist John Sutton to create some new folk-rock celebrations like Let It Go and Good Things Happen. Lead singer Emilie Stafford delivers a soulful Angel By My Side and a laid-back calypso-style beach house meditation called There's A Wind.
Some songs also arose from our searching for meaning in the events of the day. The jazzy Prayer For Peace with Jeanne Burton on lead vocals belies the spiritual state of the world on the 5th anniversary of 9/11 and the progress (or lack thereof) we had made in bringing unity and mutual respect to power in the world in the wake of that tragedy. While the the blues rocker Keep Your Eye On Me is a bit of a different reaction inspired by those same events! Throw in a taste of bluegrass, calypso, and a little gospel and you have the eclectic sound of the Third Sunday band.
