The Lyrics
Some call him Lamb, of God above,
More than a man, conceived in love,
Was born to save us, then sacrifice,
His dying showed us eternal life.
His message clear, though softly told:
Our God holds dear, both the meek and bold.
His words still guide us, from day to day;
They live inside us ---- to light our way.
Lord, whose name is Jesus,
Your words still guide us along our way.
That gentle Lamb with all God’s might,
Became to man, our bright guiding light.
He is our shepherd, we’re not alone;
His voice still calls us safely home.
We are his lambs, but not afraid,
His love protects us, though some have strayed,
Through valleys hidden, by darkness’ pall,
Our shepherd seeks us, though least of all.
Lord, whose name is Jesus,
The least is greatest, who heeds your call.
Lord, whose name is Jesus,
Your dying gave us eternal life.
| About the Song
George’s lyrics were inspired by the duality of Jesus portrayed as both the Lamb of God and as our shepherd. John the Baptist was the first one to refer to the young Jesus as the Lamb of God. Sometime later we see a mature Jesus with disciples of his own having become a shepherd of men. The follower had become the leader.
George never intended this song to be a solo performance, but after laying down the vocal and guitar part in a single take at the studio, engineer Les Lentz declared that it should be kept just that simple and clean. So apart from adding an overdub of the bridge played on Norm’s electric guitar, and Al providing a high harmony on the chorus tag line, the song was left as a quiet acoustic guitar piece.
